The Physiatriki Rehabilitation Unit earned international recognition through the participation and presentation—by its Scientific Director, Dr. Efthymios Kouloulas—of two patient case reports at the 20th World Congress of the International Society of Medical Shockwave Therapy (ISMST), held from June 22–24, 2017 in San Sebastian, Spain.
Distinguished scientists from around the world attended the congress, where the latest developments and innovative treatments using shockwave therapy were presented by some of the most renowned medical research centers globally.
Among them, Dr. Efthymios Kouloulas, representing Greece, presented impressive results from technologically advanced regenerative medicine therapies applied to patients of his unit by his interdisciplinary team.
More specifically, an oral presentation was delivered on the full recovery of a patient suffering from chronic pain due to a partial Achilles tendon rupture, treated with extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) in combination with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections and a multidisciplinary chronic pain management program.
The second case involved the complete healing of a patient with delayed tibial fracture union (8-month duration), successfully treated with shockwave therapy combined with high-intensity pulsed magnetic stimulation (Super Inductive System – SIS).
As part of the congress proceedings, Dr. Kouloulas successfully renewed his ISMST Certification, following the successful completion of the ISMST examination on the medical application of shockwave therapy.
